Travels with my family

by Spike10764 - last update: Aug 25, 2007

Chilled White wine..and Lorraine

Home and us

My name is Kevin Johnstone, but I am known as Spike.I am married with 2 children both boys -Jamie and Daniel. My wife is named Lorraine. This is a record of our holidays together and our travel experiences.
We live in Carlisle UK and I,for my sins am a fan of Carlisle United Football Club(always near the foot of football league Division 3-at least we're consistent).Thats a Carlisle shirt of some years vintage I'm wearing in my photo-at the football museum in the Nou Camp Barcelona.(Eddie Stobart is a sponsor-I'm not a truckspotter-another cross fans of the Cumbrians must bear).
We started off like most going on package deals, but in recent years have discovered the satisfaction of making our own more flexible arrangements(the computer is a big help here-lets face it the big travel companies are "taking the michael"nowadays).
We have discovered the joys of the mobile home holiday-the campsites are perfect for kids-safe and lots to do,very good facilities-and,most important a fridge for the chilled bottles of vin blanc that are the must of any holiday.
Eurodisney...the magic if not the weather

First steps...

Two years ago,we tried our first campsite holiday-in Northern France(France is a favorite destination for me),at a place called Vic- Sur- Aisne. We used this site to visit Eurodisney(about 60 miles away)as we had our own car with us.The campsite-La Croix du Vieux Pont was excellent, with a retractable roofed pool and lots of ameneties for the kids to enjoy.Well worth a visit, andwe will return one day.
Thiepval Memorial -Somme-Lest we forget...

The Past...

Another reason I wanted to go to Northern France-I am very keen on the history of World War 1.My greatgrandfather was killed on 1st July 1916 near Thiepval at the Battle of the Somme.I got to visit the Thiepval Memorial where he is commemorated as one of the 73000 with no known grave. It is a place that makes you feel very humble and respectful of the sacrifice the men of the time made.
My great grandfather-Private John Farrer 19455,of the 11th(Service) Battalion, Border Regiment , (Lonsdale Pals Battalion) - Killed in Action1/7/16 -France & Flanders.
I intend to return here and follow the Lonsdales routes in the battle one day soon
Me and the boys-the harbour at St Jean De Luz

One step further...

Last year we went one step further from the point of view of travel-we booked a flight Manchester to Toulouse via Schipol, arranged car hire at the airport and drove to Biarritz on the SW coast of France. The area is a treat to visit-lovely beaches, surfing, near San Sebastian in Spain, for a change of culture. It's a lovely city.
We liked St Jean de Luz-a pretty fishing port 10 miles from Biarritz-well worth visiting.
Perfect-the scene ,not the kids...Biarritz beach

The point of it all...

Biarritz-the beach ,the surfers, the sand ,the sea-what more can you say-the kids loved it
Le Ruisseau des Pyrenees campsite at Bidart

Things to come...

The campsite we stayed at was excellent-Les Ruisseau des Pyrenees,in Bidart, near Biarritz.Definitely the best one we've stayed at.

This year we've gone a stage further and booked flights on the net,car hire and contacted via email and letter,a campsite in Peschiera Del Garda,Italy to arrange accommodation of our own.it's a bit of a step in the dark ,but I've found it an interesting thing to attempt-many thanks to Gabriela at Camping Del Garda for bearing with me and speaking remarkably good English(better than my Italian).Hopefully everything will come together just right on July 19th.
An album will be posted as soon after our return as is practicable-one thing slows me down though-I really must splash out on a digital camera!
Where's dad...he's for it!!!

What it's all about...

The deadly duo...looking ...well....

....deadly

Whole heartedly agree Camping Le Ruisseau is brilliant, fell in love with Bidart four years ago and the Basque culture been back every year since and this year we are going to buy our own property there. Hope Italy lives up to your expectations
