China's recent development results in extreme social contrast. Relentless construction is constantly changing the shape of inhabited areas and the life of the residents and migrant workers within. Traditional low-end business and street merchandise mixes with top-end shopping malls and 5-star hotels. Poverty intertwines with splurge life and the A-to-Z of Chinese lifestyle can be sampled in just one place. I have explored the "Pearl River Mega City" which hosts 40 million people in Guangdong Province, the "backcountry" spanning from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and beyond, and down to Macao.
My hub was the city of Dongguan where, I've been told, scooters are not allowed as they were too frequently used for mugging. Traffic is anyway chaotic and left to the prowess/skill/consideration of drivers. Traffic rules are normally broken - except in areas with surveillance cameras - in any possible way. Intersections often witness traffic jams and honking only adds to the discomfort. Bicycles and loaded three-wheeler carts come and go in any direction without lights at night in dangerous situations. The high density of imported expensive cars underlines the quest for a material world and the western-world style. Food is excellent and affordable. Not the right place to shop for electronic devices though, as the prices of these products are generally higher compared to Europe and the USA.
I don't know what's behind this guy's nap. Laziness? Or a well earned and deserved rest after a 14-hour work shift? But I can guess this guy dreams of a better life, whatever it may mean to him.
