The Italian Northwest. Where else? Well, I'm a native and this is my playground around my hometown Torino. This area was part of the former House of Savoy territory, which through troubled events had annexed the rest of present-day Italy and expanded its territory to establish the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Piedmont is today one of the twenty regions into which the country is structured.

Piedmont borders W with France, NW with Aosta Valley region, N with Switzerland, E with Lombardy and S with Liguria region.
Its capital, Torino, is a baroque city that became the first capital of Italy, later moved to Florence and eventually to Rome. Piedmont has plains, lakes, gentle hills and majestic mountains that crown the region to its borders with France and Switzerland. Wines from Piedmont are among the finest in Italy and worldwide appreciated. Vineyards can be found in several areas, but the most visited is undoubtedly the Langhe area where precious Barolo is grown.
Piedmont hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics and it was a perfect occasion to let this beautiful region become "another" place to visit in Italy, a well kept secret with increasing popularity.

Outdoors Activities

The Western Alps are a paradise for skiers, bikers, paragliders and mountaineers of any level. From relaxed hikes to extreme climbing, trails and routes come in a wide variety. Rock climbing short and long routes range from bouldering to 8-class ratings, mostly on granite or gneiss and are well maintained for year-round activities. Some areas are too warm to enjoy during summer months but become perfect in winter. You may refer to various publications on the matter or visit the following:

Don't spoil our environment!

Piedmont offers a good number of remote roads allowed to motor vehicles, but if you wish to take such a chance, please contact local authorities and make sure to avoid off-limits roads.

Picture was taken on the "Via del Sale" (Salt Route) starting from Colle di Tenda near Limone Piemonte. This unpaved road runs along and across the Italian-French border at an average elevation of about 2,000 m (6,700 ft) above sea level for some 30 km (20 mi) before it gradually steps down to the seaside. Perfect for off-road or dual-sport bikes, while some narrow or steep passages would prevent SUVs from completing the route all the way.
Don't be distracted by the gorgeous views and keep an eye on the road!

Many trained cyclists also enjoy this route. Overnight stay is possible at Rifugio Barbera. Suggestable spot for those bringing a tent or sleeping bag would be near Balcone di Marte, where the morning view of seaside is unrivaled.

I really enjoyed reading about Piedmont, especially about the language, wines, cuisine, cheese and truffles! Grazie! Barolo is my absolute favourite wine!

Ah, this is fantastic :-) Thanks Antonello :-)) Perfect combination of magnificent mountains, architecture and...if Bagna Cauda contains much garlic, I could eat it all day long :-) Is putting up the tent really allowed in the mountains ?
