Despite Amsterdam's reputation for drugs, drugs are not legal there. Although walking through the streets of Amsterdam you will be bombarded by dealers trying to sell you Cocaine, Extacy, and herion. Best thing to do is just keep walking by.

Even if the purpose of your trip is for the decriminlized drugs, don't get stuck in just the coffeeshops and the SmartShops. These places can easily suck you in, and you will miss all the attractions the city has to offer. These places are generally in the same place, in the old section of town, make sure you get out and explore all areas of the city. There is more to Amsterdam then coffeeshops and the red light district.
