Millions of people visit Washington every year, yet few of them wander far enough from the Mall (The City's monumental core). Those that do find a diverse city with great neighborhoods, historic victorian townhomes and a city rich in its own history.
Most vistors to DC spend nearly all of their time in and around the monumental core called the "Mall." This is because that's where all the main museums and moments are located. The downside is that other than a few food stands and institutional food served at the museums, there isn't much local flavor.
If you have the time, explore DC's neighborhoods. They are rich in history and culture. Rather than eat a hot dog in the searing heat, jump on the metro to an uptown neighborhood to grab a nice meal and see how us locals live.

frenchchef Wed Oct 10, 2007 15:48 UTC I will not return to this restaurant for three reasons: The restaurant added ten dollars to our tab after we left; They skimped on the wine serving using false measures; The food was mediocre at best. | XenoHumph Tue Aug 5, 2003 21:24 UTC Great tips on DC! I loved this city when I lived there for a year! I miss the Uptown theater! | littlesam1 Tue Aug 5, 2003 20:24 UTC A very different Washington page with very helpful information. I really like your comments about France on your restaurant tips. |
