Torun Things to Do: 153 reviews and 254 photos
Just go and go through the Old Town streets passing by great historical (but renewed) tenement houses and antique granaries. It is a great experience, I warrant for it.
Wilam Horzyca Theater
Two architects from Vienna, Austria, Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer designed this building and it was build in 1904 (or so) in the secession style.
Sculptures of two muses - Melpomena and Terpsychora - stand in front of the theater.
Wilam Horzyca Theater is the only one (beside theater for children) professional theater in Torun.
Address: Teatralna Street
Directions: North (3 minuts) from the Market Square
Almost so huge as the Old Town Market Square - 95 x 95 meters. In the old days a place of trade and craft. In the middle the former evangelical church.
Address: New Town Market Square
The former neo-gothic evangelic church (19th) now is use as a cultural institution ("Tumult" Gallery).
Address: New Town Market Square
St Jacob Church
One of the biggest and most beautiful gothic temples in Poland. Dates back to years 1309-1340, extended in 14-15th century. At its beginning used as parish church for the New Town.
It seems like basilica because the main church's nave it higher than the lateral. Tower - 49 meters high (the roof from 15th century).
The inside equipment mostly dates back to 17th, but there are also some remains from the Middle Age.
Address: St Jakub Street
You can be surprised by narrowness of some houses at the Old Town Market Square.
Address: Market Square
Dabski Palace
From the end of 17th century with the great baroque facade - impresive acanthuses and the magnificent portal.
Founded by Stanislaw Kazimierz Dabski, bishop and politician. The Dabski family was its owners till 18th century, later - the army casino was organized there (first Prussian, then Polish).
From 50-ties of 20th there is an university's brach of Fine Art.
Address: Zeglarska Street
Sailors' Gate
These are the city walls. That part of them, called Sailors Gate, apparently is not the most interesting part of walls (and photo here is caught from the inside not the outside of walls).
There are three remained gates in Torun and some turrets too. I suppose that the greatest attraction is the Leaning Tower (dates back to the Middle Ages) - about 15 meters high and more then 1 meter deviation from plumb-line.
Address: Along the Wisla River and Bulwar Filadelfijski
Monstrance turret
This is an accidental street scene with the turret in the background.
The turret is called "monstrance" and has an octagon as the shape of its base. It was built in 15th century as a part of fortification in the inner side of city's walls. Now it is usually used for cultural purpose.
Address: Pochmurna Street
Colorful houses at the Szeroka Street
Along Szeroka Street you can see not only the shops' window, but also the great houses, usually with a long history. On the photo an example of them.
Address: Szeroka Street
