  • While on the tram, watch your stuff closely! I had TWO epxeriences within a 8 hour period on the tram!
The first I was with some friends and I warned them about the tram and to watch their things- they didn't do well enough. Within a 2 minute period, my friend had her wallet and sony mavica (big digital camera) stolen right off of her! They are quick and good at what they do.

I also had a man get on the tram with me and he was standing as close as he could to me. He kept looking at my bags. He kept trying to get his hand behind me so he could get in my bag. I actually said to him, "you need to get away from me"- He was very gutsy and wouldn't stop trying, even when he knew I knew! He was doing hand signals to another guy on the same tram, and it was uncomfortable and dangerous.

He didn't pick me, but please, please, please be careful.

  • Make sure the meter is ALWAYS running, always! They will try and get away with not putting it on and overcharging you!

  • Also, another tidbit about the taxi drivers....

One of my friends approached a taxi driver and asked him to give her a flat rate to get back to our hostel, he quoted her a price and she came back to tell us how much it was.

I wanted to try an experiment, so I went out to the same taxi driver and asked him in German how much would he charge for a flat rate fare, he quoted me at HALF the price he originally told my friend.

I know that it's a sad and unfair advantage for most travelers, but if you speak German, chances are you will get a much better deal!

I have found that out with my travels, that Germans just aren't popular! Sadly, at least the language is understood and I get to explain that I am just a silly American and that German is my second language. Usually, everything is great after that. :)

I think you were lucky with the driver. Certainly outside Prague it's not a good idea to speak German. Germans are not very popular here(mainly for historical reasons) Some of my German would speak English and maybe admit to speaking a little German.
