 I have found that out with my travels, that Germans just aren't popular! Sadly, at least the language is understood and I get to explain that I am just a silly American and that German is my second language. Usually, everything is great after that. :)

 I think you were lucky with the driver. Certainly outside Prague it's not a good idea to speak German. Germans are not very popular here(mainly for historical reasons) Some of my German would speak English and maybe admit to speaking a little German.
