Leicester Square is a hopping center-point of London, the place where movie premiers take place, and music fills the air. However, among the people are various sorts of criminals.
When I visited, I noticed lots of dodgy people hanging around in the darkened areas, especially around ATM's.
As recently as November 2004, there was an active warning to people using ATM's in London, especially Leicester Square. There is a new scam in which criminals will insert tiny scanners into the ATM. The scanner will take the information from your bank card, and then later, the criminals can take that info, and imprint it onto an entirely new card and use it however they choose.
This is very frightening!
The ATM's in Leicester Square are dodgy anyway, and don't make the user feel totally secure. When I HAD to use one, I noticed lots of people watching me use it and I had a bad feeling about using it.
I suggest going to reputable banks and secure ATM's in London, not street side ATM's, as those are completely unsecure and an easy target. Try to get your money during the day and have enough with you at all times.
This is a very real threat, and should be taken seriously. The worst attitude a traveler can have is "it won't happen to me"
Beware!
