Masjid Tanah is a town (not really a kampong as listed in VT) and sub-district of the Alor Gajah district. It is located about 30 kilometers tnorth of the histrorical city Melaka.
It is said that the name Masjid Tanah was given to the town following the existence of an old mosque which was made from clay and mud. The mosque, known by locals as Masjid Tanah (or literally translated as Clay Mosque) was located along the banks of a river (Sungai Baru) that runs through the town. Unfortunately, the clay mosque was demolished in 1830 and a new mosque was later built at the same site where it used to be.
To the locals, the town is also fondly known as Simpang (junction). This is because the older part of the town was established around a T-junction. Even though the town has eveolved over the years with new development in its surrounding, the area around the T-junction still remain as a focal points of the town. |
