Railway Stations: Bukit Jalil LRT Station

  • Bukit Jalil LRT Station

  • This is the locotion for the finale of the film Entrapment (1999, starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones).

In the film, the station was refered to as Pudu Station but actually it was shooted here - Pudu Station is close to the city and not as big as this station. It was rumoured that the name had to be changed in the film since the actor found it difficult to pronounce Bukit Jalil as compare to the two syllables Pudu...

As the station connect the Bukit Jalil sport complex with other parts of the city, it is quite big in anticipation of big turn out whenever there is any event going on. Come on an ordinary day, U'll be suprise that the station is quite deserted - just like in the film when Catherine Zeta Jones was waiting for Sean Connery.

Off The Beaten Path: Dayabumi Complex - the forgetten Petronas Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dayabumi Complex is one of the earliest mega project in KL. Built in the early 1980s, the Islamic inspired design white modern complex is supposed to blend well with its surrounding as its just a short walk from the Sultan Abdul Samad building.

The complex houses an office tower block, a shopping arcade (City Point) and the Kuala Lumpur General Post Office. The office block used to be the HQ for Petronas before the building of the Petronas Twin Towers.

Off The Beaten Path: Forest Research Institue Malaysia (FRIM), Kepong
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Forest Research Institue Malaysia (FRIM) is located in Kepong, about 30 minutes drive from KL. As a forest research institute, its offers plenty of information and hands on experience on the rain forest. Among its attraction and facilities are arboreta, extension garden, camping area, jogging trails, a forest museum, nursery, picnic area / waterfall, wetland area and its main attraction - the canopy walkaway.

The canopy walkaway is located at about 300m above sea level, and was constructed in 1992 with aid from the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). The walkway system spans about 200m and is suspended between trees at about 30m above the ground. The main species on which this system is suspended are Chukrasia tabularis (Surian batu), Intsia palembanica (Merbau), Prterocymbium javanicum (Melembu), Artocarpus elasticus (Terap nasi) and Scaphium spp (Kembang Semangkuk).

The walkway system and the platforms are vantage points from which one experiences a panoramic view of the forest. Beside this, the walkway system functions as a platform for scientific study of canopy flora and fauna. The
trail to the walkway is uphill, steep and pysically demanding. However, the view from the walkaway worth the trouble getting to it.

Walking time, one way, is between 30-45 mins, depending on the route chosen, the group size and level of fitness. The average time taken for the round trip is 2 hours.

    Entrance fee:
    RM5 Adults
    RM3 Students (Age 13 onwards)
    RM1 Children (Age 7 - 12 yrs)
Additional charge is levied for guided walks.

Entrance to this walkaway system is by prior arrangement only. It is opened to the public from Tuesdays to Saturdays and 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, from 10.00am to 2.30pm.

Off The Beaten Path: St John's Institution
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kuala Lumpur - St John's Institution main building
  • St John's Institution main building
  • by mansionion

  • One of the school that still stands tall in the city St John's Institution, located on Bukit Nanas and surrounded by Kuala Lumpur's skyscrapers. St John's celebrating its centenial annivesary this year (1904-2004).

The school is famous for its main block building - a red-brick building with Grecian-Spanish influences - which has been classified as a heritage building. It is the most elaborate school building in the city.

St John's was started when the federal capital's Catholic mission's efforts to set up a school for catholic boys came to fruition. Prior to that, Catholic boys attended either the Bukit Nanas Convent or the Victoria Institution (a rival school to St John's till this day), which was set up in 1893. Older boys attended the Victoria Institution, a Protestant school, much to the distress of Father Renard of the Catholic mission in Kuala Lumpur. He eventually collected enough money to build a school. On Jan 18, 1904, St John's had its first school day. Forty boys attended and the number grew to 100 within six months.

In the last 100 years, thousands of boys and girls - girls were admitted for Form 6 - from all walks of life were schooled at St John's. Royalty, children of prime ministers, politicians, merchants and civil servants went to school together. The school produced students who went on to make names for themselves in various fields. Indeed, the old-boys roll reads like a Who's Who of Malaysia.

Off The Beaten Path: The Bok House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Once upon a time in KL, there was a mansion in Jalan Ampang belongs to a wealthy man whose daughter was so deep in love with a less wealthy man - a bicylce trader. Obviously, the love affairs is not being approved by the girl's family and the marriage proposal from the bicycle trader was rejected and she was later married to someone else.

Heart broken, the bicycle trader worked hard to prove that the girl's family was wrong in rejecting him. He worked really really hard to prove himself, hard enough until he managed to build and own another mansion just accross the street from the mansion where the girl's family live.

The mansion is still standing until today and known to the locals as "The Bok House". Though it is no longer occupied and has been dwarfed by other skycrapers around it, it is still standing as prove of a man's undying love to a woman eventhough the other mansion accross the street has since been demolished.

Take a peek at the mansion from its outside if you happened to be in KL. Located just about 100 meter from the Petronas Towers, it is probably the closest answer that KL has for the Taj Mahal.

Update : The Bok house has since been demolished on 15/12/2006. What a pity and a big lost to KL.
