Petaling Jaya or PJ as the locals call it was developed in the 1950s as the satelite town for Kuala Lumpur. It was the solution of the British administration to address the spillover and problems as a result of the rapid development of Kuala Lumpur.
Located in the district of Petaling in the state of Selangor, the satelite town and district were officialy named Petaling Jaya in 1953 with the aspiration that it would be a succesfull development ("jaya" is the Malay word literaly means success), and what a succes it is judging from how PJ has evolved since.
Even though PJ Old Town has been in existence since the early 1950s, the development of PJ began to take shape in 1952 with rows and rows of houses were built there to accomodate the migration from KL. The heart of its development was then centred around the 'PJ New Town' or fondly refered to as 'State' by the locals.
The Petaling Jaya Local Authority was later formed in 1954 to oversee the town's development and from then on, seksyen (or "section" in English) after seksyen of residential and commercial areas emerged as rubber and oil palm plantations made way for development.
The opening of the first phase of the Lebuhraya Persekutuan (Federal Highway) in 1957 which divided PJ into two parts and links it with KL and Port Klang also enhanced PJ's reputation as a strategically located town. PJ was later upgraded from a local authority to a municipality in 1964.
By the 1970s, PJ had grown into an expansive town that also included the Sungai Way-Subang (SS) area and the new township of Subang Jaya. The township was further extended to the north that saw the rise of the vast Damansara area, which also includes Damansara Jaya, Damansara Utama, Bandar Utama, Kota Damansara, Damansara Perdana, Mutiara Damansara, Damansara Impian and Bandar Sri Damansara.
Today, PJ's strategic location and development has made it a metropolis in its own right in the Klang Valley, a bustling area that could easily rival KL. Scattering around the 97.2 square kilometres of PJ are modern shopping complexes, international-class hotels, convention centre, public park and entertainment outlets that rival their respective counterparts in Kuala Lumpur. Petaling Jaya Hilton, the first international-class hotel in PJ, is found here.
The rapid development of PJ has in turn spilt over to the establishment of Subang Jaya as the satellite town of PJ. Next to Subang Jaya is Bandar Sunway, a blossoming township where a premier theme park, a shopping and entertainment complex, a modern convention and exhibition centre and a hotel resort come together to form one of the most glamorous spots in Malaysia - it's a resort living within a city here as they claim.
The Damansara area and Bandar Utama are yet another achievement for PJ. Amid its residential area with upper- to middle-class houses stand its centerpiece, the recently extended One Utama shopping mall, which is ranked among the largest and most trendy shopping complexes in Malaysia. Together with the enclave of Damansara Utama, it is a popular area known for its nightlife activities. The area beyond Bandar Utama - notably its immediate neighbour the newly develop Mutiara Damansara that boast to have Asia's largest IKEA store - has in turn become the golden triangle of PJ - a prime spot for residential and commercial purposes.
So rapid is the progress made by PJ that it has become an common alternative to Kuala Lumpur in practically every aspect - some time even over shadow the later - for both locals and tourists. However, its most comforting achievement so far may well lie in its ability to remain green and roomy.
With all its success, PJ was declared a city on 20.06.2006.
- In a nutshell:A pleasant neighbourhood
