Tanjung Tuan Travel Guide: 20 reviews and 26 photos

Tanjung Tuan (also known as Cape Rachado) is renowned for its lighthouse. It is interesting to note that even though Tanjung Tuan is located in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan; it is actually a territory of Melaka and hence the lighthouse is controlled by the Shahbandar (Admiral) of Melaka.

The site of the present lighthouse is said to be the same site where an old lighthouse was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century (hence the name Cape Rechado) in order to guide ships to the safety of Melaka's harbour during her hey day. The lighthouse was built on a hill top overlooking the Straits of Melaka and on a clear day, one can see the town of Port Dickson and the outline of Sumatra across the Straits of Melaka from this vantage point.

It is also said that there is a spot here where the legendary 15th Century Malay warrior of the Melaka Sultanate, Hang Tuah, was supposed to have set foot. It is also believed that Parameswara, the first Sultan of Melaka was burried in this area.

Many historical events are said to be taken place in the seas around Tanjung Tuan, including the fierce battle between the Portuguese and Dutch armadas in the 16th century which resulted in the sinking of four warships including the Nassau - a famous Dutch vessel. Some artefacts from the Nassau has been succesfully excavated from the sea and are on display in the Lukut Museum.

Apart from its historical significance, Tanjung Tuan also boast a diverse flora and fauna including 54 species of bird in its forest reserve. It is also a strategic location for bird watchers to observe migratory birds. Flocks of migrating sparrows, honey buzzards, swifts, hawks, and eagles stop over here annually.
