Last stop before Philadelphia

Being a half-bred Puerto Rican, I fell in love with this island when I was still in grade school. I was getting ready to move back to Philadelphia after my time in the Navy, my California hitch hike and living down in Brigantine New Jersey.
I have family here so I get to see a lot of the real local customs, IE skinny dipping on the fest of St. Thomas, even though I planned the trip to avoid that this particular year.
There's always something great going on here. On an island so small it's hard to not eventually see all the tourist spots and find a few special places of your own.
While San Juan is really nice, my favorite place in Puerto Rican is Ponce. The city still has all the old world charm of a 18th Century Spanish city, and the sense of history is all around. the fact the my family has three bakeries here may also have tainted my view.

Pros and Cons

Pros:MM food, people and history
Cons:Rain forest bugs . . .
In a nutshell:Well worth the trip -- not far or expensive.
