Dal Lake

Srinagar, the capital of Jammu & Kashmir, has been in the news in recent times for all the wrong reasons. So much so that we have almost forgotten its beauty and serenity. The Dal Lake, which is one of the highlights of Srinagar is an oasis of tranquility and peace. With the Zabarwan mountains as a backdrop, the lapping of the waters, as you ride a shikara, you could lose yourself in the beauty and tranquility.

Living in a Kashmiri houseboat is a unique experience. Some of these houseboats have 7-8 en suite bedrooms, a dining room, a living room with a TV and a little verandah which looks out into the Lake. Most of the furniture and wall panels are made up of exquisitely carved walnut-wood. And they have some interesting names too: Helen of Troy, Heevan (misspelt: Heaven), Texas, and many more!

Shikaras, or the small boats, that ferry you from the houseboat to the lake shore and back dot the Dal Lake. Shikara shopping can be a fun activity and you can buy anything from jewelry to clothes, plants and flowers from the salesmen who ferry their wares on thes shikaras. But beware, you may end up paying ten times more for that lovely trinket than you would if you bought it in a regular marketplace!
