The City I Love to Hate

I am a Reluctant Delhi-ite. Though I have lived in the city - and its suburbs - for well over 15 years I don't quite consider myself to be a Delhi-ite. Why? Because it's the city that I love to hate. As most Indians (who do not live in Delhi will tell you): it's big, brash and brutish. And I couldn't agree more. Of course, the Dilli-wala will have a "loud" counter-argument and tell you that Delhi or Dilli (as it is pronounced) is the place of "dilwale's (the big-hearted)." Well, the argument can go on and on....But over the years, I have learnt to appreciate the city's charms, albeit reluctantly.

Lutyen's City

Built on a lavish scale with wide roads, Lutyen's Delhi is a charming place. The greenery, the wide roads, the architecture, few other cities in India can compare with such lavishness.

Delhi - the city of the Moghuls

All across the city you will find beautiful monuments, forts, Gates - most of them built by the Mughals. Few other cities in India offer such a rich tapestry of wonderful sites, some of which are sadly neglected.

Pros and Cons

Pros:The green spaces and pockets of tranquility within a bustling city
Cons:Traffic hazards, the heat and dust, the cows on the street and the general chaos

I know your heart is in Bombay (Mumbai) but Delhi seems pretty good to explore all the lovely monuments, gardens and markets (especially Dilli Haat)!!! So enjoy it while you can!!! Good tips on the autorickshaws and cheap hotels.
