All up I spent about 1 of my 2 weeks in Ireland in Ferns. This is because one of my good friends lives here. Ferns is definietely not a large village, but what it lacks in geography it makes up for it in its history. Ferns was once the capital of the province Leinster. Many historical ruins still stand today including the castle, abbey, churches and high crosses. |
A view of Ferns from the top of Ferns CastleFerns is on a hill, and Ferns Castle (like most castles) sits at the top of this hill with great views of the surrounding land. Still amazes me that the people in this village live across the road from a castle that has been standing since the early 13th century. |
The ruins of Ferns AbbeyThe Abbey sits at the bottom of the hill (at the 'north' end of Ferns). |
