~ Bella Roma & Citta Del Vaticano ~

A view from San Pietro over Vatican City and Rome
And so, after 2 days in Milan and a 6 hour train trip (Inter City) I arrived in Rome! My first impression of the city was given to me by the train station (Roma Termini), and it is rare that any train station of any city will leave a good impression. But, admittedly I didn't have any real problems at the station or getting away and to my hostel, only 5 minutes away (also the station does have some nice shops there).

Rome is unlike any other capital city I have ever been to. The amount of monuments, historical buildings and places, within such a small area is astounding. For any fan of history, architecture or art, this is a city that you must visit!
The crowds around the Spanish Steps
Rome is the eternal city - and I think that this is because the locals and tourists alike beat their feet along the streets, like blood pumping through a heart. The people are the pulse of this city, keeping it alive.

Rome seems to be one of those places that you will either love or hate. I went to the majority of the main 'tourist' destinations and I think the only one I was really disappointed in was the Spanish Steps. On the other hand I loved the Trevi Fountain (not the crowds though), it was bigger than I thought it would be and exceeded my expectations for it.
There is definitely a 'feel' to Rome, sometimes it feels rundown, or dirty and sometimes it feels old. And I mean old in a good way, there are no huge 20th century skyscrapers or neon lights flashing off billboards. It is an amazing city, but one that you have to experience yourself - so that you can decide whether you like it or not.

But, my opinion, I had a great time here and will definitely be back!

ALSO - for those of you who have just come from my Vatican City page, you can find my tips in 'Things To Do' and there are also some travelogues featuring aspects of the Vatican City as well.
