Okay - well all up I only spent 2 1/2 days in Cairns - because it was my way to and from Fitzroy Island.

It seems more like a town than a city, and is a great place to do some shopping. They have a main shopping mall where you can find anything you need - but also a lot of good jewelery and craft shops on the main roads - as well as plenty of places to find aussie souvenirs.

Another thing about Cairns that most people will notice straight away is the weather. In summer it is incredibly humid in Cairns. Cairns is part of 'Tropical North Queensland', so it is often humid, hot and I would guess that they'd have some excellent storms.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Sun, glorious sun
  • Cons:Humidity, no beaches
  • In a nutshell:Use it as a base to explore the Great Barrier Reef and rainforests!!

    I spent some of my childhood in Townsville, to the south of here, and we had spectacular storms there, and I would suspect the same here. Great tips!
