Opera House / Circular Quay: Circular Quay

  • Favorite Thing: A great place to walk around in summer. Yes there are heaps of tourists, but that's what makes it a lively place to be. You have the Sydney Opera House on one side, the Rocks and Sydney Harbour Bridge on the other. In the middle are different kinds of ferries that will take you to almost any point in the harbour.

Fondest Memory: There are quite a few street performers around the Quay with all performing different kinds of acts, some comical, some 'dangerous' (aka, with fire involved) and there was even some aboriginals performing 'tribal' dances (representing a story).

    General Tips: Currency
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney - Australian Currency (AUD)
  • Australian Currency (AUD)
  • by Marpessa

  • Favorite Thing: Australian currency is in dollars ($AUD). There are 100 cents to a dollar. We have 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces (coins), which are silver, 1 and 2 dollar coins, which are gold.

We also have 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar notes. Each note is a distinctively different colour and they each have a 'clear window' in the notes. "Australia was the first country in the world to have a complete system of bank notes based on plastic (polymer). These notes provide much greater security against counterfeiting. They also last four times as long as conventional paper (fibrous) notes." (taken from: www.dfat.gov.au/facts/currency.html)

For more information - like who are the people on the notes see the website above.

    General Tips: My Guide
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: When I was in Sydney I travelled by myself, did it my way. But I did buy a guide book before leaving and found that it came in very handy.

It was Lonely Planet's 'Sydney (Condensed)' (2nd ed. June 2002). The maps and information were spot on. The suggested itineraries for walks were great and very helpful. It was also how I found my accommodation. While you can still get the 'Condensed' guide, the most recent edition (Nov. 2004) is now called 'Best of Sydney' - I recommend this guide for anyone who is planning a short trip to Sydney.

Hi Marpessa Cassie! As a Cass, and from Sydn, you make me so homesick, but love your pics and honest comments-they are so true!! I have been to Geelong many times on business, and it is one of my favourite places. Now I live in Kunming China.
