This photo was taken way back in 1978, and is near to where I spent the first few months of my life. It is in Easter Ross, and is a view that could be seen from near my first home. It is just north of the Black Isle, which is in turn north of the city of Inverness.
Inverness is the capital of the Highlands, and gained its city status in 2000.
Inverness City
This is where I did my degree in Cultural History. The university was built in 1495, and is one of the four original ancient universities of Scotland. It is particularly famous for the chapel "crown" where the bell would have hung. The photo shows the main building of the university, which was the only building there for a long time. It is called "King's College".
The university is in Old Aberdeen, which is now incorporated into the city of "new" Aberdeen. Hundreds of years ago, the two places existed independently. Old Aberdeen has retained all of its charm, with very old buildings, cobbled streets and narrow lanes.
In the academic months, it is certainly a student town, as they are everywhere! A wonderful place to go to university, especially do to a course involving history, as you really get a feel for a fascinating past just walking around the campus.
The history of the University of Aberdeen is a great one, so I would recommend this site:

This is Craigievar Castle, which is about 30 miles west of Aberdeen, near Alford. Built in the 17th century, it is one of many castles in the north east of Scotland.
It is said that Walt Disney used Craigievar as a template for his fairytale castle. Dame Judi Dench (star of Mrs Brown) liked it so much, she wanted to buy it, but The National Trust for Scotland, who own it, were unwilling to sell! A good thing too, as it is open to the public.
Check it out!

This is the main street of the city of Aberdeen. Built entirely of granite, on a sunny day it looks like silver, hence the nickname "The Silver City". It'a also called the "Granite City" for obvious reasons. As part of the history of Aberdeen, Union Street is actually quite young as it was built in the early 1800s.
The first reference made to the port of Aberdeen is 1136AD, but as many archaeological digs have shown, Aberdeen is even older than that.
