The Scottish Youth Hostel Association hostel in Kyleakin is a fairly average establishment - in fact one of the least impressive hostels that I've stayed in. I stayed here on two occasions a few days apart both times in twin bedded rooms made up of a bunk bed and a sink. While the first room was badly in need of redecorating, with holes in the wall and a dodgy electricity point, the second room was acceptable enough for the price.
I'd also say the location of the hostel isn't that great, in that Kyleakin is in the east of the island near the mainland, perhaps somewhere a bit further north west such as Portree might be a bit more useful for seeing the sights and accessing the other islands by ferry, certainly if you don't have your own transport.
Unique Qualities: Unique qualities included a swimming pool in the shower room - no matter what time of the morning you went in there for a shower, the floor would be wet to the point that it was fairly dangerous. All they'd need to do would be to put a mop and bucket in there and, voila, problem solved. Another annoying thing was that the single light in the loos was broken for two nights in a row - slightly annoying when you suddenly find yourself in need at 3am in the pitch dark...
On the plus side, it's fairly large, fairly cheap and anonymous and the kitchen is clean. Also has (expensive) internet access and a tv room to hang out in if your room gets too claustrophobic. It's one of the few hostels on the island that have rooms with fewer beds and family rooms, in case you don't fancy sharing a dorm with loads of snoring strangers.
