Casa Marbella: Quiet lodging in Tortuguero

  • This is a small family run bed and breakfast in Tortuguero village, right on the canal. It is a house, not a hotel so very appropriate for people who like the quiet and would like to have a bit of family atmosphere around them.

The rooms are spotlessly clean and you can also have a private bathroom with warm water (not easily available in Tortuguero!).

Breakfast is served on either a roofed porch for when it is raining (i.e. often!) or just by the canal (push your chair too far out and you fall in!)

Unique Qualities: The owner of Casa Marbella is a biologist, who offers guided tours on his boat in the mornings. He is very nice and is of great help to make the most out of your Tortuguero experience. He is very knowledgeable about the area and has his own information office about Tortuguero.

    Marenco Lodge: Pictoresque Jungle Lodges
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Marenco Lodge is situated on the Osa Peninsula between Drake Bay and Corcovado National Park.

It is accessible only by boat - but the management will arrange all transportation issues.

You can stay in either cabins or bungalows. I stayed in a magnificent rustic cabin which was great value for money considering it was very nice and upscale.

Unique Qualities: The cabins are situated amongst the forest and have a great view of the Pacific Ocean. Each cabin has a veranda with rocking chair from which to enjoy the views and the ocean breeze.

You can also enjoy the sight of toucans, scarlet macaws, hummingbirds and various other colourful tropical birds without leaving the porch of your cabin! One can also very easily see white faced capuchin monkeys on the lodge's grounds.

The lodge has a private reserve with various rainforest trails for the visitors to enjoy. Just down the hill where the cabins are situated there is a nice beach where to swim, sunbathe or simply stroll to relax.

Budget travellers be warned! The cabins are indeed relatively cheap but you are expected to have 3 meals a day at $10 each person so the cost does add up. There are no shops whatsoever from where to buy food so you those meals are the only food with which to live!

Marenco also organises various tours, the best being the tours to Corcovado (San Pedrillo Station) and Cano Island.

Marenco Lodge has an excellent restaurant with breathtaking views and an unforgettable luxurious atmosphere. The food (3 course meals) is very good, and the management are happy to make arrangements for any special requirements (vegetarian etc).

Cabinas La Rivera: A quiet place in Fortuna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Cabinas La Rivera are situated just 800m from the Fortuna village centre. They have a spectacular and large garden filled with birds. One can also see iguanas and poison dart frogs.

The cabins are quite spacious and warm water is available. They are also very clean and highly recommended.

Unique Qualities: The very well cared for garden is the main attraction of Cabinas La Rivera. The other budget accomodation options in Fortuna are quite drab and in the middle of the village which can be quite noisy.

Food is put out for the birds near the breakfast area, and all kinds of brightly colored birds come for a snack - even parrots!

There is a small river just behind Cabinas La Rivera (hence the name) and the relaxing sound of its flowing water lull you to sleep at night.
