From the small township of *Bamaga it's only 'roughly', literally, 35k's to the Tip of Australia. First a 33k drive, with the compulsary corrugations of course, followed by a rainforest walk and then a rocky climb and - a bit of an anti-climax - that's it. You've made it to the very Top of Australia !! The Real Top End ! Hearty congrats all 'round !
*The name Bamaga comes from the name of the 'Chief' of a group of Torres Strait Islanders who moved to the mainland there circa 1949.
Here is the web-address for that info.

(A V.T. keyword 'Bamaga' search brings up a place in Afghanistan as the only other.)
Please visit my Bamaga travelogue below, May '05.
Thirty six kilometres south of Bamaga the Jardine river crosses most of the Penninsula. The river also serves to mark the southern edge of the Australian and Torres Strait Islanders controlled territory.
All north of that line, including other features, as well as the Pajinka resort and Seisia campground, is under their administration.
A river fording point - for 4WDs - used to exist a little way away but now the crossing must be carried out on a self contained crossing barge, carrying a dozen or so vehicles at a time. It is a substantial river complete with person-eating crocodiles ! So the barge is a sensible facility.
The fee to be paid entitles travellers to the use of all the camping facilities except some which have a further charge applied.
The picture shows our battling chariot looking like a "little red brother" tagging along behind the big boys in the queue for the ferry.
Our excitement was running very high as we had all but attained our "impossible dream" ! Only one more bone-jarring and rattling hour or so to go !!
