The story of Western Australia's major, valuable goldfields began with the discovery of gold at Coolgardie in 1892; 38 kilometres away (20 miles), to the north-east, Kalgoorlie's treasure literally lay waiting to be unearthed.
The area could be called Treasure Inland. Thousands of gold-seekers pushing handcarts and the like, with great hope in their hearts, walked hundreds of miles in stifling heat to get to the gold-bearing area. In from Fremantle on the west coast and from Albany on the south. They came from all parts of Australia and beyond her shores. Little did they know that the supply of water there of any sort was virtually non-existent and it would take the incredible construction of a large pipeline, bringing water 500 kilometres from the hills behind Perth to allow the commercial development of the Gold-fields.
The major "find" which led to the beginnings of the city of Kalgoorlie was carried out virtually by accident by one Paddy Hannon. One of the mementos of Paddy, a miner, is this drinking fountain where the water we drink comes out of his waterbag. The statue is well cast but cannot be seen in detail in my photograph. It is in the centre of the bustling main street of Kalgorlie.
Its other half of twin towns is the town of Boulder so that the full, correct title is Kalgoorlie-Boulder. They are joined by fully made roads and are slowly but surely intertwining wth each other.

Wow, could have stood much more elaboration on your inland travels finishing at Kata Juta. Cheers.
