top hats

Warren Steven Heaton is a young Welsh artist currently exhibiting his oil colours in the Ceri Oriel Richards Gallery in Swansea University. He explained to me how he liked to go to Dartmoor on a `busman's holiday' in the summer, and where he liked to paint. Apparently it is a strange place, with very bleak landscapes, and strange crevasses, normally covered by `featherbed' ferns, but that open up in the peat and which are the source of many a story. One tells how a walker comes across a top hat lying in the earth. He stoops to pick it up and finds a man underneath. He starts to pull him out of the peat but finds him too deeply stuck in the mud. The man explains how he is sitting on a horse which is still underneath him.
