The Ginger Man Pub: Haven for Beer Drinkers

Nightlife Spot: The Ginger Man Pub
The Ginger Man has about sixty beers on tap, and at least a hundred more in bottles, so if you're into beer, this is the place to come. They regularly add new beers - and remove old ones - so there's no chance of getting bored. It also has very tasty food, virtually all of it non-fried, which is pretty unusual for a pub. The soup-and-sandwich option is especially good.

Dress Code: There's no dress code. On Thursday and Friday evenings there are plenty of suits and ties with the after-work crowd drifting in (often in packs); it can get pretty loud early on though it usually quiets down. We usually preferred to head there on Sundays or Mondays. The only real downside is that they allow cigar-smoking - in fact they even sell cigars. I've never figured out why people like to smoke those things: I'm not rabidly anti-smoking, but if you're unlucky, being near the cigar-puffers can be unpleasant. (Of course now that New York has gone smoke-free, this should not be a problem.)
Address: 11 East 36th St
Directions: That is between Madison and Fifth Avenues.

TKTS Offices: Cheap Broadway Tickets

Nightlife Spot: TKTS Offices
Everyone knows that you can get reduced tickets for many on- and off-Broadway shows the day of the event at the TKTS outlet in Times Square. What most people don't know is that there is now another outlet down near South Street Seaport replacing the one lost in the World Trade Center attacks. We were there not too long ago and waited no more than 5 minutes. That's a big improvement on the hour plus you might have to wait in Times Square for the same ticket options. Not to mention that the new office opens at 11am as opposed to 3pm in Times Square.

Nightlife Spot: Blind Tiger Alehouse
A ‘blind tiger’ was a nineteenth-century term for a rather dodgy bar, where you were as likely to be rolled for your money as served a drink, but this Blind Tiger has one of the best selections of beer in New York, and a convivial atmosphere pretty much any night of the week. If you drink all of the beers here – presumably not on one night – they’ll allegedly put your name on a plaque behind the bar, though the last time we were there we weren’t able to spot the plaque.

I do agree somewhat, though I have to say I went there to grieve and don't regret it, and the many signs of sympathy there are touching. | hundertmorgen Tue Aug 5, 2003 10:51 UTC Harlem Walking Tours... really a great tip!
