This was our first hotel experience in New York, since we weren't staying with friends on this occasion.
We had heard good things about the hotel, which has an eye-catching front with protruding fiberglass constructions that might be wafting smoke, or billowing material, or bizarre tusks.
The building is quite old, and this is very visible in the corridors, which often look less than impressive, despite the jazzed-up walls, which are covered in (often very interesting) modern art. The clientele seemed pretty funky - plenty of artistic types in among the out-of-towners. There's a bar, too, that's supposed to be very hip, but it was closed when we were there.
Like many NY hotels, you pay for location, and this is very convenient to areas like Times Square, the Empire State, Chelsea and Union Square, all just a short walk away.
Unique Qualities: The artwork is worth lingering over: there are prints, but also many original works, including a soup can signed by Andy Warhol in a whimsical reference to his prints.
