Dixville Notch is a small town (with only approximately 75 residents) located in the far northern part of New Hampshire. In fact, it is closer to Canada than it is to most other New Hampshire cities and towns.
In addition to being home the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, on the the few remaining New Hampshire grand hotels, Dixville Notch is probably best known in connection with its longstanding middle-of-the-night vote in the U.S. presidential election! In a tradition which began in the 1960 election, the eligible Dixville Notch voters gather at midnight in the ballroom of The Balsams. The voters cast their ballots and the polls officially are closed one minute later - not that difficult to do in such a small town. The results of the Dixville Notch vote are traditionally broadcast around the country immediately afterwards.
We traveled to Dixville Notch, not to better understand its voting process, but for a mini cross country ski vacation at the Balsams. It was a distance, but it was well worth it! |
