The location of the Lafayette Campground, nestled right in the heart of Franconia Notch State Park, could not be more perfect. Camp sites are wooded and you really like you could are deep in the forest (rather than just off I-93).

As camping goes, the rates are not cheap, but in our opinion they are well worth it.

Unique Qualities: The best part about Lafayette Campground are the step-out-of-your-tent hiking options. From the campground, you can hike west up towards Lonesome Lake and Cannon or east towards the Lincoln/Layfayette Ridge.

Another great thing about Lafayette, at least for tent campers like us, is that it offers no RV hook-ups. Some day we may be into RV camping, but for now, we prefer our camping to be rustic. So, we generally prefer campgrounds without RVs.

Not technically all that close to Bethlehem, the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel is well worth the additional distance. One of the few remaining grand hotels of New Hampshire, a stay at the Balsams is an incredible lesson in how things used to be.

The decor is opulent, the dress code for dinner requires men to wear jackets, and the staff is very attentive.

Unique Qualities: Dixville Notch is the first town in the nation to cast its vote in presidential elections with the entire town voting just after midnight on the day the polls open. As a result, the area has been visited by significantly more political figures than your average small rural town. A room at the back of the hotel, which is also the town polling place, documents this unique history with a great display of photographs.
