Eating & Drinking in Boston: Smoke Free in Boston
  • Tip Rating:
  • Boston Eating & Drinking in Boston
  • No smoking in Bean Town

  • One of our favorite and Boston's newest 'local customs' is not so much a custom as a law. As of the spring of 2003, Boston workplaces are completely smoke-free.

What does this mean to you? Well, since waitresses and bartenders are working, no one can smoke where they work. This means, in addition to restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs, and the like are all smoke free! Not everyone is happy about this (mostly smokers and the unlucky folks who live near one of these types of places and have to deal with smokers on side walk), but we sure are! And it turns out, owners are pretty happy too since business actually appears to be increasing since the ban went into effect.

Boston Red Sox vs. Yankees: Bo Sox and the Yankees
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Before you visit Boston, be warned: Bostonians are very passionate about the Red Sox and sensitive about their (at least until last year) less-than-stellar record. No team brings out those feelings more than the New York Yankees, although people are feeling a little more relaxed about things since the Sox' playoff victory over the Yankees. Still, don't expect to be showered love if you insist on wearing your Yankees cap around Boston, especially if you're wearing it for fashion value alone!

Speaking Bostonian: Talkin' the Bawston talk
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • For those who assume that the locals all speak like John F. Kennedy, the reality of Boston's streets can be somewhat surprising. The average Bostonian is much more likely to say something like 'I cahn't find a place to paak my caah' than to wax lyrical about being a Berliner. There are Kennedy types, too, although you'll find yourself wondering if they're being entirely serious (they are, but they sure sound funny). If you want to fit in, go to Fenway Paak, try to get yourself a ticket and, in-between various epithets, try to pick up on the local lingo.

    Local Customs: Restaurant Week
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Want a way to try out some of Boston's hottest restaurants without breaking the bank. During Restaurant Week (which is actually two weeks, one in winter and one in summer) different area eateries offer three course meals for a song. Check the website for dates and participating restaurants.

One tip - reserve your table well in advance! The most popular restaurants fill up quickly unless you are willing to eat really early or really late.
