Haarlem is just a short train-ride from Amsterdam - it's effectively a suburb of that city - but it has a character all its own. It's a more relaxed place, less cosmopolitan than Amsterdam certainly, at least these days, but a key city in the Netherlands' history, and one of the centres of Dutch business and art in centuries past.
