| Mt Meru in the shadow of Kilimanjaro on summit day |
| | When you see this snowcapped mountain peak rising majestically from the rolling savannah of Tanzania, it's not hard to understand why Mt. Kilimanjaro is often called the "Roof of Africa" . With a high point of 19,340 feet above sea level, Kilimanjaro is one of the largest free standing mountains in the world. It is also the highest point in Africa.
The mountain is is made up of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo (19,340 feet), Mawenzi (16,896 feet), and Shira (13,000 feet). With an incredible diversity of ecosystems - glacier, snowfield, desert, alpine moorland, savannah, and tropical jungle are among those found on the mountain - the hike is an amazing experience. And, one that is well worth the challenge. |
