"Finding glaciers" Glacier National Park by mht_in_la

Glacier National Park Travel Guide: 10 reviews and 21 photos

I visited Glacier National Park in early June, 2003. I only spent a few hours there, mostly in Rogers Pass and the Park's Information Centre. The listed trails (Hemlock Grove, Loop Brook, etc.) were all closed when I drove through. Not sure why. I thought this is an all-season park and they don't close for snow. Perhaps it's for avalanche control.

According to Parks Canada, there are over 400 glaciers covering one-tenth of the Park's area. I didn't get to see any glacier up-close, only from far away. Unlike Banff, Jasper, or Alaska where you can just walk up and touch the ice, glaciers here require serious backcountry hiking to get to. That may explain why there are a lot less visitors here than other National Parks in the Rockies.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the US side is called Glacier National Park, and the Canadian side is called Waterton Lakes National Park or not? Bill.
