Jasper -- just super!!

Mountain goat in Jasper
Jasper National Park is the highlight of my trip to Canada. Deep in the Rocky Mountains, Jasper has it all -- massive icefields and glaciers, steep canyons and gorges, hot springs, turquoise lakes, stunning waterfalls, abundant wildlife, and very friendly locals. It is also the 3-way continental divide; rivers originated from Jasper flow into the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Arctic Oceans.

Towards the Whistlers summit
Jasper National Park is easily accessible to the public. There are two major highways: Icefield Parkway and Yellowhead Highway. The north-south Icefield Parkway (#93) is considered one of the most beautiful mountain drives in the world. It connects Jasper and Banff with numerous vistas in between. The east-west Yellowhead Highway (#16) connects Jasper to Edmonton, junctioning Icefield Parkway in the town of Jasper.

Lots of effort was made to keep the Park a friendly and safe place to visit, such as the Tramway up the Whistlers and the many bridges and paved trails crossing canyons. Despite so, much of the Park's 10,878 square km is only visited by wildlife. In Jasper I felt for the first time that wildlife becomes an integral part of the scenery as it should.

Snocoach on Athabasca Glacier
My visit to Jasper National Park was memorable. I went up the summit of Whistlers and down the canyons of Maligne. I soaked in the hot springs of Miette and froze in the icy glaciers of Athabasca. I ran free with mountain goats and ran away from black bears. This is the Rockies at its best.

If you liked Jasper, you should visit Wells Gray Park near Clearwater in BC. It's wilderness beyond comparison.
