"No whalers. Only whale watchers." Tofino by mht_in_la

This small, quiet fishing village at the tip of a peninsula is quickly gaining fame as Vancouver Island's top attraction these days. In fact, a few days after I returned from Canada, I found in the Sunday issue of Los Angeles Times (June 15, 2003) a half-page article on Tofino. They even did a special intro to the young New Zealand girl who travelled to Tofino and stayed. She's currently running HI-Tofino (Whalers on the Point Guesthouse) where I spent a night.

Before my recent trip to Canada I had never heard of Tofino. Since I decided to visit Pacific Rim National Park by car and spend a night there, Tofino became my natural choice of stay. It's so close to the Park with the same forests and beaches that I wonder why this portion of the peninsula is not included in the Park. Perhaps it's already developed with too much human settlement. I can only guess.

Tourism is growing fast in the village. There are boats to take you to watch whales or visit hot springs. Sightseeing float planes take off frequently, screaming over the sky of Clayoquot Sound. But Tofino's isolation may continue to keep busloads of tourists at bay. Unless you fly in, most visitors from mainland have to first cross the Strait of Georgia to Vancouver Island by B.C. Ferry, then drive 5-6 hours (highway #4) to get here. That's a lot of work just to see a fishing village. This time I used Tofino as a base to explore Park (see my Pacific Rim National Park page). Maybe when I come back next time I'll make Tofino my final destination.

The views in Tofino are incredible. I have been wanting to return, but you are correct it is a challenge to get up there in the first place.
