I stopped by Seattle for other trips before, but never had enough time to take a good look at it. So when I planned my Canada trip, I allotted a night in Seattle before crossing the border to Vancouver. This also made an interesting comparison between the two bustling cities by the Pacific Northwest.

Although Seattle has a reputation of having lots of rain, I was lucky to not see a drop. It was a little foggy in the morning, but most of the time it was sunny. The locals may argue that Seattle really doesn't get that much rain; it has less annual precipitation than New York city. In my memory, Seattle is always bright and sunny.
Despite the sunny weather I had, there's this gloom I felt in the city. To me Vancouver seemed younger and more exciting to visit. Perhaps it's the recent economic downturn. Perhaps it's the city's biggest employer Boeing leaving. Seattle had been hit hard with unemployment rate soaring above 7% (national average is about 5%). Once the money runs dry, you take the "yup" and "hip" out of the city.

The sights I saw were mainly downtown attractions. I especially liked Pike Place Market and spent lots of time there. These are what you'll see in my Seattle travel pages plus some personal observations. Overall, Seattle is quite walkable in the downtown area. I didn't have a chance to venture outside to see Mt. Rainer or catch a Mariners' game. That'll be next time.

Thanks. | shpynka Thu Aug 28, 2003 14:17 UTC See... I am walking on Needles on your pages! Some heads from here were also lost, fish heads. Starbucks - yuck! Come and try real coffee in Philly (from former WA residents and Starbucks employees). I see Confucius and his "wise" remarks :) |
