Mission Santa Ines Old Mission Santa Ines Review

When I visited Mission Santa Ines the mass was about to start, so I got to see the church for free (like many California Missions, entering the church/garden usually requires a mandatory "donation"). Inside the church the art works were nicely restored.

I entered Solvang via the winding #154 highway from the east, which cuts through the beautiful Santa Ynez Mountains. Actually Santa Ynez is more like gentle hills than mountains. And the drive is very pleasant.

First institution for higher education

In the garden of Mission Santa Ines you'll see the site of California's first institution for higher education. Hard to believe, right? The institution is called "The College of Our Lady of Refuge of Sinners". It was established here in May 1844, with classrooms and dormitories.
