Salton Sea was a mistake.

35 miles long and 15 miles wide, it's hard to imagine California's largest surface water body was formed only 100 years ago by human mistake and natural disaster. In the late 1800's the whole Salton Basin (it was dry at the time) was being mined for salt. Also a complex system of canals were developed to bring in water from the Colorado River to irrigate the furtile Imperial Valley.

Then in 1905, the mighty Colorado River went on a rampage. Its floodwater overflew the banks and rushed into the Salton Basin through the newly constructed canal systems. Effort was made trying to block the flood but the mistake was too huge to stop. After 16 months of injection a sea was formed and stablized as we know it today.

It is nice to see some history of this strange place posted. The Salton Sea does make for a good side trip!
