Juneau is unique and beautiful. It's the biggest port of call in Inside Passage. Its harbor can accommodate up to 5 cruise ships at a time. In the summer, downtown Juneau is always filled with tourists looking to shop and dine. Besides tourism, Juneau is also the capital of Alaska. About half of its 30,000 population are somehow related to goverment jobs.

| Juneau viewed from Mt Roberts | Juneau is surrounded by great fjord scenery. Squeezed between the narrow Gastineau Channel and steep mountains behind, Juneau has no road system connecting to the outside world. That somehow prevents the city from over development.
In May 2002 I flew from southern California to Juneau, and spent 3 days there before boarding AMH ferry north bound. In Juneau I got my first sighting of glaciers, whales, and bald eagles; a great opening to my Alaska trip. I was also hooked on Alaskan beer till today. Despite the constant clouds and gloom, I had a wonderful time and was impressed by Juneau's natural beauty and colorful history.

The icebergs look familiar, I saw them in May, 2002, as well. Blue ice is cool. No pun intended. | Goner Tue Apr 27, 2004 05:23 UTC Spectacular photos. Great tips for winging it in Juneau. | chanoc2003 Wed Mar 10, 2004 20:58 UTC Good tip on the Juneau hostel. Located in the liberalist neighborhood, Star Hill, in Juneau. I stayed here in April 2000 for three weeks, loved it! |
