Anchorage is the biggest, and to some the most "unalaskan" city in Alaska. It has a population of about 300,000; almost half of Alaska's population live here. To me it seemed no different from any mid-sized American city where you'll find shopping malls, supermarkets, downtown highrises and residential suburbs. But my view may be skewed because I never spend a winter here.

Anchorage is the economic and political center of Alaska. However, there is rivalry with its sister city Fairbanks, the second biggest city of the state, over oil money. Also, Alaska's capital Juneau has been power-wrestling with Anchorage in its effort to move the capital north.
Geographically, Anchorage is the anchor of Alaska. To its north is the great interior where population is sparse and mountains grand, including Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America. To its south is Kenai Peninsula, the playground to many Alaska residents; the area is generally called Southcentral Alaska. From here to the west is the Bering Coast and Aleutian Islands.
Anchorage can be touristy in the summer. But to those travelling through the wide and wild Alaska, it's a great place to relax and recharge before going back to the wilderness.
