Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Grand Palace home of the Emerald Buddha
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beautiful temple holding the famous emerald buddha, tourists though cannot take photos of the emerald buddha. Plenty of things to look at get there early or some parts might close. Charge to tourists visiting the temple and appropriate clothes must be worn.

Chao Phraya River: Trip down The Chao Praya River
  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting off at the last BTS Sky Train stop on the Silom line, the Saphan Taksin station we arrive at the Phraya river.

It is very cheap to travel on the river if you stay with the usual tourist boats which leave every 10 minutes or so. Choose the stop you want to go to including Grand Palace, Wat Po the Museum, Temple of Dawn, Snake farm, Royal Barge museum or Orchid farm. Alternatively you can just go for the ride and get other boats to bring you round the different canals (khlongs) leaving the river. On the weekend you should go to the floating market on the khlongs. We paid 400 baht for an hour on the khlongs, incl. the floating market, which was not too expensive.

Not only do you see some amazing buildings and boats on your journey you will also see the day to day lives of Thais working and living on the river.

Watch out for touts may offer you a trip in a long boat for over 100 times the price of the larger boats. These touts are likely to take you somewhere you do not want to go.

    Wat Pho: Wat Pho Compound
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Are you bored of going to temples and looking at buddhas? Well not only does this hold the most famous buddha but Wat Pho has also got a lot of other potential for a day out with decorated gardens with Bonzai trees and fountains and just a great place to go walk about. Theres even a basketball court here maybe for when the monks get bored!

    Wat Pho: Buddhist Rituals
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bangkok Wat Pho
  • buddhist rituals
  • by alvis
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • When in Wat Pho you can partake in many buddhist rituals. You will have to pay for the items for some of these rituals but don't worry the money goes to maintaining the Wat and monks and not to any touts.

Lighting incense putting it in front of the buddha then praying at a buddha and putting gold leaf onto the buddha statue. Not sure the significance but will update when i do.

Using flowers to drop water on each others head.

You take a piece of paper from a box in front of the Buddha which u then take to the desk and get given a script telling you your fortune.

Dropping 1 baht into 100 tins along the side of the wat you will get your 100 baht changed to pennies at the desks inside the Wat.

    Parks: Ben-ja-si-ri or Queens Park.
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Lovely park on Sukhumvit Road directly beside the Emporium at Phrom Pong BTS.

Its a large park surrounding a lake. Lots to do for sports etc. Small skateboard park, Basketball court, tennis courts, play area, exercise area, swimming pool (need to show doctors note before you will be able to use the pool for health reasons.)

During the day you'll get lots of people chillin beside the pond or under the trees plenty of places to sit about and do nothing all day.

Great first thing in the morning when its not too busy. Gets filled after lunch when people get out of work.

Things To Do: Check out the elephants
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • You will still see elephants being used to carry things on the streets. There will normally be a person sitting on top and 2 people to guide them.

Watch yourself as I was near reversed into by 1 they aren't great at steering backwards and watching for pedestrians at the same time unlike buses.

Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn): Temple of Dawn from Chao Phraya River
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Most of you will see it from the Chao Phraya River but going to it is worth the extra 5 minutes.

We got a boat across after Wat Pho and after paying for the boat across and an entrance fee we arrived at the Wat. We walked round the base once and climbed up to the 1st tier then made a move back out. A lot of people hastled us to buy merchandise.

Baiyoke Tower: Don't stay here just go for the visit.
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • For those who do not know Baiyoke is the tallest tower in in Bangkok.
After spending the night here I was a bit dissapointed by the price charged. It is far too expensive for the room and is best just to call in and visit. The buffet breakfasts and lunches are well worth the money as there is a wide selection of foods from all over Asia and deserts etc. All you can eat so turn up as hungry as you can be and make the most of it. There is also a nice bakery at the reception floor (not ground) of the hotel. The skybar is useless and tacky. It is best to just call in for a feed and visit the top floor to get a great view of Bangkok.
