This church , built by the Emperor Charles and dedicated to St Charles, was built just outside the ringstrasse, in thanks giving for delivery from the plague. This is a great church, and not too big either. The added bonus at the moment is that they are restoring the frescos in the dome, and you can travel up in the lift to look at them more closely, an opportunity not to miss.

If you want to see the pictures of Otto Wagner (and some other great pictures ) you must visit the Palace Belverdere. It was the summer residence of the Prince Eugene of Savoy and is set in wonderful gardens, just beyond the ringstrasse

Cheek by jowl with the modern shopping streets, the Cathedral of St Stephen has been lovingly restored, and is a fascinating place to spend some time in.

A short ride out of the city of Vienna, by train or bus brings you to the sleepy suburb of Heiligenstadt, one of the places Beethoven spent some time in, and now a small museum. If you've only got a short time in Vienna, not one for the 'Must see' list, but interesting for Beethoven fans

As well as the Stars with the names of famouse composers in a trail across the city, there are many statues of famous composers who visited or lived in the cite. Schubert, Mozart, Brahams to name but a few. A fun way to spend an afternoon is to do a tour of them.

You can't miss this wonderful building, built by the 'Successionists' to show their art. But the best thing about the building is the outside, (though the space inside is wonderful). This is also the home of the Beethoven Freise, but perhaps I am alone in being rather disappointed in this friese, designed by Klimpt, originally for temporary exhibition. His pictures in the Belverdere, and his decorations of the houses nearby are much better examples of his work, at least in my humble view.

When you go to Karlesplatz station, have a look at the pair of building above, the original station buildings designed by Otto Wagner, You can even enter one, it has been turned into a cafe, and the porch area is well worth a look

Scattered throughout the city is a thread of stars embedded into the ground, each one representing a musical 'star'. It is fascinating to note those composers who don't get a star, as well as the positioning of the stars!
