Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle from Princes Street
Edinburgh is my husband's home city, and we have spent several happy times there, exploring its nooks and crannies. I learn something new about the city every time I visit, and am a big fan of Ian Rankin's detectives stories set in the city.

Although a capital city, it is not large, restricted by Arthur's seat (a large rock) on one side, and the firth of forth (with Fife beyond) on the another. This makes for some great views.
View down the Royal Mile from The castle
Edinburgh has two main streets, at least as far as a tourist is concerned; the Royal Mile, with the castle at one end, and Holyrood Palace at the other and the original 'Main Street'; and Princes' Street, build when the city was extended in the eighteenth century, with the area to the north of it refered to as the 'New Town'.
So many of the buildings along the Royal Mile date from before the eighteenth century (Except for the now almost infamous 'Scotish Parliment' currently STILL under construction), while the buildings in Princes street and the New Town are Georgian, i.e. of eighteenth century construction.

Oh to be in England (well Scotland anyway)...

I had an opportunity to visit Edinburgh in May, and was able to see the Princes street gardens in all their beauty.

In full agreement with Horscheck on this: No such thing as too many bagpipers! August is a great month to visit, because the pipe bands practice all over town preparing for the Tattoo!
