My Amsterdam Adventures

Amsterdam

A brief glimpse of sunshine
It's almost hard to believe that it was back in 2003 when I first visited Amsterdam. (Which, coincidentally, marks my VT anniversary since I joined right after I returned!) I spent a week there alone. Well, almost alone. My friends in Leiden came into town for two nights to have dinner with me, take me to Drag Bingo and of course.....to go see the Red Light District!

I never would've guessed that I'd take three more trips to the Netherlands which included a stop in Amsterdam each time. I guess I really love the country and it's people. I love Amsterdam too. Coming from NYC originally, I'm used to and appreciate it's diverse mix of people and all the fun "freaky" ones you see there. Amsterdam has this quality too. If you've been there, you know what I mean.

The photos on this page are from my "maiden voyage" in May 2003. I've added pages and/or tips for my subsequent visits in Nov 2004, Sept 2006 and most recently, March 2007.
Walking along the Jordaan

Take a walk

I almost never rode the tram in Amsterdam. If staying in town, you can walk to just about any attraction or museum. And there's no better way to see the city. My only warning, watch out for bicyclists. They're everywhere and I, assuming that they have the right of way, always let them have it.

Do not miss walking in The Jordaan. It's charming, quiet and has great little stores.

Europe in the Rain

Luckily, I like walking in rain - especially Spring rain. It rained, at least some, mostly every day of my week in Amsterdam. The only time I really minded was when my map would get wet. Otherwise, I put my hood on and kept going. I even took my first canal ride in the rain.
A little rain can't ruin the beauty of the canals

Glad you enjoyed your four visits to Amsterdam. When I was there I rented a bicycle and had a great time cycling all around. (This summer I went to Copenhagen and did the same.) I wonder how Boom Chicago gets along now that Bush is no longer president.

HeHe! - good old Amsterdam hotels. Every time I go the one I loved so much last time has doubled in price and so is always a moveable feast. Tx for Appledore visit, Cheers, John.

Joann, thanks for visiting my Maastricht page. Both Amsterdam and Maastricht have big town squares and great outdoor cafes. Both are great! The energy in Maastricht, though, is a little more low-key. Cheers, Bill
