"Ahhhhh........Aachen!" Aachen by garridogal

It seems as if most of my trips are a bit "last minute" when it comes to their actual planning and execution. In fact, for the past few years most of my traveling has been done within 2 months or less of the date on which airline tickets have been purchased.
My trip to Germany was different in this sense. My friend and I were IM'ing with each other (He's in New York) and one morning he mentioned that a co-worker had just bought a round-trip ticket to Cologne from Newark for $198. Wow! He then got on the airline's website and confirmed that while that fare was gone, it had only gone up to $298. Not quite the "Wow!" of $198 but this was still a VERY sweet deal.
After about 5 seconds of silence during which I could hear the wheels in both our brains churning (We're Will and Grace; these things happen!) he finally said "Wanna go to Germany?"
At this point my heart is racing because yes, yes, yes OF COURSE I want to go! But.... I'd just spent a week in the Netherlands two months earlier for a wedding. And I'm not rich - no where near - I work in Publishing! And those tickets, purchased that past July were bought at that peak travel season when I don't normally vacation. But.... if we planned it for the Spring then that would give me four months to save for it. I could do this.
Well, the four months of saving turned out to be easier than the four months of anticipation. I get so worked up about travel that as soon as the ticket's booked I want to go right away or at least start planning and obssessing over it. But I managed to hold out. And that time gave us plenty of time to plan not just the trip, which was to include visits. Bryan has friends in Hannover and I have friends in Leiden, NL so a plan was hatched to see Germany, sneak into Holland, see friends and take LOTS of trains.
We were originally going to spend the first night of our German tour in Cologne but then decided on Aachen because hotels in Cologne were tied up for a Dental convention. We'd already planned to spend the last three days of the trip there; this gave us a chance to enjoy an afternoon and evening in this lovely little city.
Our next destination was Hannover.
It was our first day in Germany. We were jet-lagged and really didn't explore a lot of the sites in detail. We walked around the old town, got a bite to eat, poked our head into the Rathaus, which was closed to the public for a function, and went inside the Dom. So you'll notice that my tips are more in the nature of showing my pictures and not so much about providing a lot of background information. In other words: Enjoy the photos!
Although it was a little blustery (It actually hailed on our way to the hotel!) it was nice to soak up the atmosphere of the city and a new country (for me, anyway) and just be there.
I'd read about and seen photos of the fun statues that are all over this city. Imagine how excited I was to see one in person and well..... I can NEVER resist a good photo op!
- Pros:Small city with a cosmopolitan feel
- Cons:Our visit was so brief!
- In a nutshell:Ah...Aachen, you're lovely!
Our hotel was right off this street which seems to me to be the main shopping one. We shopped at Zara and Galeria... more travel advice
I know that Aachen has a lot of fun little statues all around. If you go, you should have no trouble spotting them. And... more travel advice
