A German town with an international flavour

Expecting just German icons, food and beer here? Think again.

This town is bursting with Australian and international craft, food and people.

Everything from Indian craft to Chinese cuisine can be found here. Take some time to talk with the shop owners as they have amazing stories to tell about both their own lives and that of the original custodians of this town.

Oh.....and yes, german food and beer can be found here too!

Just wandering down the main street itself is a feast for the eyes.

You'll find well preserved buildings dating back to the 1800's when this town was first settled. Wagons from years gone by feature prominently. You can even see a minenwerfer trench-mortar cannon captured by the 8th Battalion on the Western Front.

A walk through this town is a walk through history.

Pros and Cons

Pros:A chance to mix shopping with a history lesson.
Cons:Parking on or off street is hard to find. Get here early.

I had the delicious pleasure of stopping at Otto's Bakery in Hahndorf in Nov. 2001. It was pastry heaven...thumbs up on your Restaurant recommendation for everyone.
