An interesting blend of 3 native cultures.

An easily accessible island.

Stormy evening - Penang viewed from Butterworth
I spent three months around the northern parts of Malaysia, day tripping across to Penang at least 3 times a week.

From the mainland, the first area you'll come to is Georgetown with it's interesting and unusual blend of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures.

This part of the island is where the locals mainly live and work and you're more likely to find local prices on everything.

There are three 'normal' starting prices for bartering: local, foreigners living here, and tourist. Naturally, the locals can pick a tourist a mile off but there are westeners living here too so you may be able to use this to your advantage when bartering.

Most of the usual places that tourists go are locations that are normally frequented by locals, and that tourists have taken an interest in, rather than haven been created and maintained solely for the tourist trade.

Wander through the side streets and go deep inside the street markets past the street front tourist stores. Here you'll find the 'real' Malaysia. Enjoy!

Pros:"Shop where the locals shop in Georgetown"
Cons:"The underlying racial tension which the Government denies even exists but sometimes flares up."
In A Nutshell:"A shopping mecca, no matter what you're looking for."
