Penang without the tourists.

Butterworth is just a ferry ride from Penang and is often overlooked by tourists. Yet that's exactly why you should come here.

It has all the Indian/ Chinese temples and Malay mosques that Penang has without the accompanying tourist stalls.

You'll find open air cafes and resturaunts without the tourist prices and the food is prepared how it should really be, not made bland for the international taste bud.

Butterworth is just another city where the locals work, live and play. If you want to see the 'real' middle class Malaysia, take the time to really explore this place.

I found the locals more keen to trade on electrical items here as the market price is set for locals, unlike Penang with tourist prices. The locals are more likely to tell you the off-the-beaten-path attractions most tourists may never even hear of.

Welcome to the unspoilt Malaysia.

Hi Danni. It's nice to see something of Butterworth. A friend of mine was a native of Butterworth and I was constantly egging him about the town's name being so un-Malaysian. Fortunately he could bear it.

Sounds like the Banana Leaf is a great experience! I'm getting more and more interested in Southeast Asia... one of these years I'll get there!

Head for the coffee house. That is where you would find me too. Nice start, thank you.
