  • Whenever I move to a new city, or even stay in one for an extended period, I like to listen to the local talk radio stations to get a feel for what makes the place tick.

In Montreal, the english talk station to listen to is CJAD 800 on the AM band. It has a marvellous selection of personalities:

    - Andrew "Mr. Nice Guy" Carter in the early morning. Why this fellow hasn't run for politics is beyond me!

    - Gruff but hilarious Tommy Schnurmacher from 9 to noon. Somebody can't stand him but his politics & mine are pretty similar so I enjoy his rants with great delight!

    - Husband & wife team, Kevin Holden & Trudie Mason, in the early afternoon. From all accounts they're a happily married couple but the "debates" they get in with each other sometimes are real "doozies"!

    - Affable Ric Peterson on the drive-home show.

    - Eramelinda Boquer & Al Gravelle in the 8 - 10pm slot. These two are perhaps my all time favourites because they don't ever hesitate to speak what's on their mind and each have a terrific sense of humour!

    - Peter Anthony Holder ends the day between 11pm - 2am. His show is the most varied of all, entertaining the night owls of Montreal with a potpourri of varied entertainment.

  • Long before I ever moved to Montreal there was an hilarious play here called "Mambo Italiano". It was autobiographical in nature, written about the [gay] screenwriter's life growing up in an Italian family in Montreal.

They finally turned it into a movie and it is so incredibly funny!!! While some might make "ethnic slice of life" comparisons between it and "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding", it has a unique charm, all on its own.

It also offers an insightful view into Montreal with some great scenes from around the city!

  • Several national & international retailers use different names in the province of Quebec. So is the case with "Couche-Tard". Anywhere else it would be called "Mac's".

It's a reliable place to get the handy essentials of life. All are open 24/7.

What a lot of people don't realize is that the headquarters of Mac's is actually in Montreal!

    Local Customs: Street Performers

  • Throughout Montreal you will come across street performers of every variety. Favourite locations for them are wherever the tourists are, which tend to be Old Montreal, Prince Arthur Street, and Rue St. Laurent.

The fellows pictured here were particularly good. Though if I was the guy on the top I wouldn't be juggling after burning my hand!

If you do watch or listen to such performers for awhile then be sure to give them a couple of bucks!

That "expansive set of interconnected shopping malls" sorta reminds me of Chicago! I understand Londoners went wild over Krispy Kreme, as well, when it debuted @ Harrod's! Your Baton Rouge photo is gorgeous. :) Wonderful page on Montreal.
